James Gunn, Director of next year’s Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy, confirmed on Facebook that YES, Vin Diesel WILL play the part of Groot in the film.
First and foremost, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy releases in August 2014 nationwide. And, for those of you who did not know, or on unfamiliar with the comic book world, The Guardians of the Galaxy is based after a Marvel Comics’ series.
There have been many iterations and versions of the team known as The Guardians of the Galaxy over the years, starting some 40+ years ago. To say that the team’s origins a just a bit outside the norm, with what many average moviegoers are familiar with when it comes to Marvel comics, would be a huge understatement. Let me give you an idea:
In the aftermath of the Phalanx invasion of the Kree, Star-Lord decides to form a team of interstellar heroes that will be proactive in protecting the galaxy, rather than reacting to crises as they happen. To this end, he recruits Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, with Mantis as support staff. On the recommendation of their ally, Nova, the group establishes a base of operations on the space station Knowhere, which possesses a teleportation system with near-universal range. An intelligent, telepathic dog named Cosmo is Knowhere’s chief of security and works closely with the new team. After a confrontation with the Universal Church of Truth, the team meets a semi-amnesiac man who identifies himself as Vance Astro – Major Victory of the original Guardians of the Galaxy. Astro’s declaration inspires the as-yet-unnamed team to adopt the “Guardians of the Galaxy” name for their own… and the story continues.
I could go on, as the history of The Guardians of the Galaxy is rich as it is extensive. But if you want to have a deeper understanding of the group’s origins and adventures throughout the Marvel Universe, please, by all means…..HAVE AT IT! [Visit the Marvel Wiki for more information]
Second, Who is Groot?
Groot (also known as the Monarch of Planet X) is an extraterrestrial plant-like monster (think somewhere along the lines of a humanoid Treebeard, like in Lord of the Rings, though not as big) who initially came to Earth seeking humans to capture and study. His story as to how he became a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy is more fully explained in HERE at the Marvel Universe Wiki.
Lastly, a Vin Diesel Groot is both exciting and a bit strange. Definitely a role that takes the iconic ‘Fast and Furious/Riddick’ star a little outside the box, if you compare to previous films he has appeared in.
So, what difference, if any, will a Vin Diesel Groot make? Looking at the character in question, more than likely, any scene with Groot in it will be entirely CGI (computer animated) or mostly CGI. A Vin Diesel Groot will therefor be primarily a voice-over (whihc he did with outstanding success in the Iron Giant), and maybe some emulated face and body movements? If this is the case, who cares who’s acting in this role, it will be a computer-generated character anyways?
In actuality however, there a few things that a Vin Diesel Groot can give us:
3. The Voice
It’s not much, but they are ‘trademarks’ so-to-speak specific and unique to Vin. Who knows, maybe James Gunn and company have some other surprises for us come August 2014.
