Probably one of the coolest job opportunities I have seen in a looooong time! NASA hiring a “Planetary Protection Officer” to essentially guard and protect Earth and its inhabitants from a possible Alien invasion. Interested? Let’s see what the job entails.

NASA hiring a “Planetary Protection Officer”

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is currently looking for someone with a secret security clearance to ensure alien life, or “organic-constituent and biological contamination” doesn’t make it’s way back in a space ship.

More than that, this person is “responsible for the leadership of NASA’s planetary protection capability, maintenance of planetary protection policies, and oversight of their implementation by NASAs space flight missions,” according to the job listing.

Candidates must have “advanced knowledge of Planetary Protection,” experience overseeing nationally significant space programs and have demonstrated “skills in diplomacy that resulted in win-win solutions during extremely difficult and complex multilateral discussion.” After all, protecting the planet is sure to present challenges.

Requirements include frequent travel. Could business trips include intergalactic travel?

That’s a lot of responsibility for one person, which is why the job comes with a six-figure pay: $124,406 to $187,000 annually.

Let’s look at this closer, shall we?

NASA hiring a “Planetary Protection Officer.” First off, you HAVE TO ADMIT, this is about as cool as it gets when it comes to job titles. The trick would be keep a straight face when someone asks you what you do for a living.

“ensure alien life, or “organic-constituent and biological contamination” doesn’t make it’s way back in a space ship…
This would indicate that your role goes beyond just monitoring and alerting authorities to the presence of alien life, but actually taking part in the operation to protect the planet and its citizens. Does this mean access to cool equipment? Secret space-based Weapon systems?

This person is “responsible for the leadership of NASA’s planetary protection capability, maintenance of planetary protection policies, and oversight of their implementation by NASAs space flight missions.”
You would most likely have access to the White House? The Pentagon? Have a seat at the table so to speak, as an expert? Also looks like you’d be heavily involved in space programs and operations.

Candidates must have “advanced knowledge of Planetary Protection,” and Diplomacy.
Not sure WHO exactly would already have experience in this particular skill, but maybe they allow for you to learn on the job? And Diplomacy? Does this mean you’d be tasked with making first contact? Could be cool if you’re meeting E.T., but not so cool if you were making contact with a Xenomorph? Yikes!

Travel does beg the question… travel in spacecraft?

And the Salary? $124,406 to $187,000 annually
Money looks great, although if we think about it, you’d think defending the ENTIRE planet would pretty high on the priority list in the big scheme of things? Wonder if there are PERKS as well?

What do you think? Something you could realistically apply for?
