The Playlist recently reported that the ever elusive, ever moving date for the Dc Comics Justice League film is now slated to hit theaters in May 2017. But even more interesting is the release of dates for several other DC Comics films.

May 2016 – Batman v Superman
July 2016 – Shazam
Xmas 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, we’ve all heard plenty of news about, most notably the all-star and heavily overloaded cast they have decided to pursue for this film. Ambitious, bold, risky, this could either by a huge flop or a huge boost in the DC Comics vs. Marvel box office war.

And, Justice League and Man of Steel 2 have also been continuously discussed, but what’s relatively new are some of additional DC Comics films on the docket.

Shazam by Alex Ross

Shazam? Recently had a post about Warner Bros and their moving forward with development for Shazam, with more news to apparently be announced at the upcoming ComicCon: San Diego. Rumor even has it that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson might star in the title role?

Near the end of 2013, The Verge pointed out that Joseph Gordon Levitt, of INCEPTION and DARK KNIGHT RISES fame would be starring as Sandman in the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s seminal The Sandman comic books.

The basis of the Sandman stories per The Verge:

The Sandman comics tell the story of the Lord of Dreams, most often referred to as either Dream or Morpheus, a wiry, haughty personification of dreams themselves. After being held captive for 70 years, Gaiman’s 75-issue run follows Dream / Morpheus as he adapts to the world he finds outside his prison and rebuilds his kingdom.

Because the relative obscurity of the Sandman character, especially among non-comic book reader, the project has been described at times as a rather risky undertaking, with critics not entirely sure how such a film will do at the box office. There’s no doubt that casting Levitt in the title role will add to the audience draw, but still, given the number of better known character in the DC Comics universe, this one doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in the big scheme of things.

Justice League

Justice League
The Justice League is coming! Eventually, even though the launch date seems to be a constantly moving target. Of course these dates are so far out who really cares right? But at least we do KNOW that there will be a Justice League film and we do know that it will feature a who’s who from the DC Comics universe. A truly epic undertaking and one that has more risk than rewards being that there will be very little character development, or at least much less than what we’ve seen from Marvel. Still, despite the ‘what-if’s’ you can’t help but to be excited about the prospects for this film.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman by Abraão Lucas

It’s been no secret that I haven’t been a HUGE fan of a solo Wonder Woman film, as I don’t believe her long time standing in the DC Comics universe will necessarily translate to box office success. And bringing on Gal Gadot as the ‘Amazonian’ warrior didn’t help the cause in my opinion [see 5 Better Choices for Wonder Woman].

The nice thing is, we’ll get introduced to Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, so that will be a good early indication of what to expect for the Wonder Woman film scheduled for July 2017. My only question is, if she is not well received, is there still time to nix the Wonder Woman film? hehehehehe….

Flash and Green Lantern Team-up

Green Lantern
This is an interesting one and up until now, I haven’t heard much about this other than rumor and speculation. Besides being an odd ‘team-up’ to begin with, I’m guessing that whomever plays Green Lantern and The Flash will be introduced maybe in the Justice League film, that will hit theaters earlier in the same year [which by the way is pretty cool, to be able to see multiple superhero films in the same year?]

Man of Steel 2

And lastly, a sequel to the hit Man of Steel which I am actually looking forward to, yet sad to see that it is so far freakin’ out. And, being that we should be seeing Lex Luthor in the Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice film, maybe the iconic mastermind villain will take on Superman in this sure-to-be-a-hit DC Comics sequel?

There you have it…

There you go! The stage is set. The battle for Box Office glory is underway between Marvel and DC COMICS. Only question is, with Marvel having an already size-able lead over DC COMICS, can DC still make a move to the front, with a rather ‘rushed’ schedule of super and somewhat risky films? I don’t know, but I sure the Hell am going to enjoy watching the skirmish!
