A Guardians and Avengers Film Coming?

Guardians of the Galaxy Director James Gunn spoke with Digital Spy about the upcoming Marvel space-based extravaganza opening in theaters August 1st, and discussed the possibility of a Guardians of the Galaxy and Avenger’s team-up to take on the like of the arch villain Thanos. Listen to the interview here.

I don’t know about you but the very notion of having a TEAM MASH-UP of this proportion, is just mind-boggling. As if just having The Avengers wasn’t enough, now you throw in the ‘soon-to-be-introduced-to-the-world’ Guardians of the Galaxy (or some of them anyways) all on the same screen?

It’s tough to even imagine the impact such an event could be? From a box office stand-point, we may be talking easily one of the potentially biggest earnings of all-time? I mean an amount so high it may stand the test of time for years to come? From a fanboy stand-point? Trying to picture the screen with so many who’s who of the Marvel universe all back-to-back and fighting the might of THANOS, an equally tremendous presence, is unfathomable.

Of course this all just speculation, and Director James Gunn may not have a clue what is down the road, but then again, maybe he does! Your guess is as good as mine.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens nationwide August 1st.

Zoe Saldana Talks Guardians of the Galaxy

Zoe Saldana is HOT! And by HOT I mean she is one of the up-and-coming, superstar actresses in Hollywood (she’s also HOT as in beautiful, but I digress….). Next week, she will star in what will be one of this year’s potentially, box-office shattering, mega hits, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and after that? Well for starters she is already committed to Avatar 2,3 and 4 and most likely the next Star Trek sequel. Oh yea, she’s also pregnant with TWINS!

Zoe Saldana is rising through the ranks and not at a snail’s pace either. With previous MEGA HIT titles under her belt like Avatar, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, she is making a name for herself in leaps and bounds. In this video interview with The Hollywood Reporter she discusses preparing for the Comic-Con onslaught:

Hunger Games Mockingjay Trailer

The second trailer to the highly anticipated Hunger Games Mockingjay has been released and like the short, initial teaser released not long ago, depicting a most-confident, President Snow, with a brainwashed Peeta at his side, this short trailer equally amazes!

What We See

Again we see President Snow, flanked by a squad of heavily armored Capitol troops, and Peeta again at his side, but this time, in the midst of the President’s address, there is distortion in the transmission as the technie, nerd tribute Beetee Latier hacks into the transmission to alert the people of Panem, that the Mockingjay still LIVES.

Creatively done, and though short, gets its point across that all Hell is getting ready to break lose in the President’s precious domain. Hopefully more like this to come preceding the film’s release in November this year!

The Hunger Games Mockingjay – Trailer #2

[yt video=”k4e-qJdEAXo” width=”560″ height=”340″ /]

Panem Today, Panem Tomorrow, Panem Forever!

President Snow is back in the limelight with this Presidential address to the denizens of Panem with a young and brainwashed Peeta dressed smartly at his side. The first Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 trailer is out!

The Hunger Games Mockingjay, Part 1 Trailer:

What do we see here? An always confident and very arrogant President Snow, composed even after the events that transpired in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with the escape of the Tributes from the arena and the beginnings of a full blown rebellion across Panem.

At his side is Peeta. The Tribute and ‘partner’ to Katniss, who was apparently taken after the arena escape by agents of the Capital and now made to ‘serve’ President Snow’s purpose. I won’t go into the why or how this came to be, unless you’ve already read the books and already know, but I will tell you, for me, this was one of the most frustrating parts of The Hunger Games trilogy.

For me, Peeta was the WORST character in the whole series and I really struggled to get through any pages in which his character was present, even BEFORE he became what you see in the trailer. It was such a ‘downer’ in the book only because his character was so weak and so fragile and no one I would ever imagine a Katniss even considering falling for. Especially when you look at Peeta opposite of Gale, a much more strong and confident character. So he was tough to stomach and it became even worse after Hunger Games Catching Fire and into Hunger Games Mockingjay.

But the trailer above is well done and similar in presentation to some of the promotional work put out before X-Men: Days of Future Past, where some of the trailers were made to look like ‘commercials’ or promotional campaigns within the film. It was very cool and not commonly done, and the Hunger Games Mockingjay trailer is just as good.

It’s not much but it makes its point. What did you think?

Apes and Guns in New Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer

A new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer was released last night, giving us even more insight as to where this most-awesome of reboots is going to take us, come the film’s release in July this year.

Dissension is in the ranks of both surviving humans and the growing population of intelligent apes in a world gone totally mad. With the humans, its Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) who barks for calls to war with the apes in order to protect the survival of the human race and Malcolm (Jason Clarke), who having befriended Caesar, makes the argument for peace. For the apes, Koba (Toby Kebbell) challenges Caesar (Andy Serkis) with calls to wipe out the humans. In the end, we see war ultimately breaking out, with the terrifying images of apes on horseback, firing automatic weapons into the human fortifications. Where will it end?

For those old enough to have had the pleasure of seeing the original 1968 Planet of the Apes, starring a young Charlton Heston, you would know that things do not end up so well for the human race and that the events we see in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, are really just the beginning of a rapid yet torturous decline of one species and the rise of another.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Trailer #3:

DC Comics Film Schedule is Out.

The Playlist recently reported that the ever elusive, ever moving date for the Dc Comics Justice League film is now slated to hit theaters in May 2017. But even more interesting is the release of dates for several other DC Comics films.

May 2016 – Batman v Superman
July 2016 – Shazam
Xmas 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

batman-vs-superman
Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, we’ve all heard plenty of news about, most notably the all-star and heavily overloaded cast they have decided to pursue for this film. Ambitious, bold, risky, this could either by a huge flop or a huge boost in the DC Comics vs. Marvel box office war.

And, Justice League and Man of Steel 2 have also been continuously discussed, but what’s relatively new are some of additional DC Comics films on the docket.

Shazam

Shazam

Shazam by Alex Ross

Shazam? Recently Comicbook.com had a post about Warner Bros and their moving forward with development for Shazam, with more news to apparently be announced at the upcoming ComicCon: San Diego. Rumor even has it that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson might star in the title role?

Sandman

Sandman

Art by by Dave McKean

Near the end of 2013, The Verge pointed out that Joseph Gordon Levitt, of INCEPTION and DARK KNIGHT RISES fame would be starring as Sandman in the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s seminal The Sandman comic books.

The basis of the Sandman stories per The Verge:

The Sandman comics tell the story of the Lord of Dreams, most often referred to as either Dream or Morpheus, a wiry, haughty personification of dreams themselves. After being held captive for 70 years, Gaiman’s 75-issue run follows Dream / Morpheus as he adapts to the world he finds outside his prison and rebuilds his kingdom.

Because the relative obscurity of the Sandman character, especially among non-comic book reader, the project has been described at times as a rather risky undertaking, with critics not entirely sure how such a film will do at the box office. There’s no doubt that casting Levitt in the title role will add to the audience draw, but still, given the number of better known character in the DC Comics universe, this one doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in the big scheme of things.

Justice League

Justice League
The Justice League is coming! Eventually, even though the launch date seems to be a constantly moving target. Of course these dates are so far out who really cares right? But at least we do KNOW that there will be a Justice League film and we do know that it will feature a who’s who from the DC Comics universe. A truly epic undertaking and one that has more risk than rewards being that there will be very little character development, or at least much less than what we’ve seen from Marvel. Still, despite the ‘what-if’s’ you can’t help but to be excited about the prospects for this film.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman by Abraão Lucas

It’s been no secret that I haven’t been a HUGE fan of a solo Wonder Woman film, as I don’t believe her long time standing in the DC Comics universe will necessarily translate to box office success. And bringing on Gal Gadot as the ‘Amazonian’ warrior didn’t help the cause in my opinion [see 5 Better Choices for Wonder Woman].

The nice thing is, we’ll get introduced to Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, so that will be a good early indication of what to expect for the Wonder Woman film scheduled for July 2017. My only question is, if she is not well received, is there still time to nix the Wonder Woman film? hehehehehe….

Flash and Green Lantern Team-up

Green Lantern
This is an interesting one and up until now, I haven’t heard much about this other than rumor and speculation. Besides being an odd ‘team-up’ to begin with, I’m guessing that whomever plays Green Lantern and The Flash will be introduced maybe in the Justice League film, that will hit theaters earlier in the same year [which by the way is pretty cool, to be able to see multiple superhero films in the same year?]

Man of Steel 2

Superman

AArt by Francis Manapul

And lastly, a sequel to the hit Man of Steel which I am actually looking forward to, yet sad to see that it is so far freakin’ out. And, being that we should be seeing Lex Luthor in the Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice film, maybe the iconic mastermind villain will take on Superman in this sure-to-be-a-hit DC Comics sequel?

There you have it…

There you go! The stage is set. The battle for Box Office glory is underway between Marvel and DC COMICS. Only question is, with Marvel having an already size-able lead over DC COMICS, can DC still make a move to the front, with a rather ‘rushed’ schedule of super and somewhat risky films? I don’t know, but I sure the Hell am going to enjoy watching the skirmish!

Edge of Tomorrow Morbidly Entertaining

Just barely got back to my laptop after having watched Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in the latest Sci-fi by Director Doug Liman [The Bourne Identity], Edge of Tomorrow. To sum it up, it was fast, it was furious at times, Tom Cruise and Blunt were fantastic and it was VERY entertaining, albeit morbidly at times [but not grotesquely entertaining – there is a difference right?]. Let me explain.

** Spoilers Ahead **

The premise of the film is basically a sci-fi version of Groundhog Day, except, rather than ‘falling asleep’ and awaking the next day only to find out you’re reliving the previous day, in Edge of Tomorrow, Cruise has to perish [in horrible new, sometimes comical and inventive ways each and every time], before he wakes back up to relive the day.

Basically – For 5 years, humanity has been at war with an alien species called Mimics. NATO military forces have federated to create the United Defense Forces (UDF). As the Mimics tighten their grip on Europe, the introduction of armed mechanized exoskeletons called Jackets allows the UDF to achieve a decisive victory at Verdun. Major William Cage [Tom Cruise], a UDF spokesman and officer in the United States Army Reserve, is summoned to London to meet with General Brigham, commander of the UDF. The UDF, inspired by the victory at Verdun, intends to launch Operation Downfall, a multi-front invasion of Mimic-controlled Europe, just off the English Channel. General Brigham orders Cage to cover combat on the beaches of Northwestern France, to which Cage objects, stating that he is not a soldier. When Cage tries to blackmail the General, he is arrested and stripped of rank. Cage is sent to a base at Heathrow Airport, where he is to deploy from the following morning to the front lines.

In the ensuing combat, the UDF forces are wiped out, but in the midst of battle, Cage takes down a particularly ‘special’ Mimic known as the Alpha. As the Alpha Mimic bleeds out over Cage, he is ‘infected’ so-to-speak, with the ability to restart the time line every time he dies. Essentially being able to repeat the same day over and over, which gives him a distinct advantage in knowing when things occur.

edge of tomorrow

Oh look, He’s Dead again!
Long and very entertaining story short, Cage, alongside others, use this ability to work their way toward finding the hive and taking it down.

There’s no fun in dying and it is indeed a serious matter when someone does in fact perish. However, in Edge of Tomorrow, it does become something of a comical event for Tom Cruise’s Cage character.

The number of times we see Cruise die [and others for that matter], is staggering, sometimes very slow, sometimes in the blink of an eye, and sometimes by design, since he knows he will wake back up and relive the same day, smarter, better and more lethal, as he learns how to combat the Mimics and predict their every move. You begin to chuckle at the circumstances and events that lead up to each death and then you begin to thoroughly enjoy Cruise, running through scenarios like a pro, after having relived a particular scene probably hundreds of times of before. It’s just great fun is all I can say.

Tom Cruise is fantastic. Not overly dramatic at any particular time, and actually very funny at times, Edge of Tomorrow is definitely going to go down as one of the stronger quality sci-fi films of 2014. And, with an early 89% at Rotten Tomatoes and favorable reviews such as this – ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Is Tom Cruise At His Sci-Fi Best [Forbes] and Edge of Tomorrow Is the Best Videogame You Can’t Play [Wired], if you’re a sci-fi nut like myself, you can hardly go wrong with Edge of Tomorrow. See it and return back here to let me know your take on it!

Marvel’s Hydra Takes Over

FINALLY!! I can confidently state with no wavering or lack of confidence that on April 8th 2014, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finally accomplished what they need to do all along, and that is truly become a part of the entire Marvel universe.

** SPOILERS **

Assuming you have already seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, you will know that HYDRA, the world-wide subversive, criminal organization dedicated to global domination, had all but destroyed the very essence and fabric of S.H.I.E.L.D. with events that transpired at Triskelion (S.H.I.E.L.D.s worldwide headquarters). Well, one of the questions (and there were many…) that you would of asked yourself after having seen this is, what happens to the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show, as this major Marvel event should also produce a major shakeup there as well?

And boy did it ever! Not to reveal too much, there were a number of big reveals that went down in last night’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Turn, turn, turn.

Agent Melinda May

Agent May
The episode starts off where the last one ended, with Coulsen holding May at gun point, eager to find out why she had access to a secret encrypted line on-board the aircraft. Do we find out why? Oh yes, and it ties into Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Agent Melinda May is as mysterious as she is bad ass, and truly uncovering her hidden allegiances and agendas is still like pulling teeth, so hard to take her at her word or actions even though in last night’s episode we do ‘seemingly’ get some insight into what she was doing all this time during the show behind the scenes. I only hope after the ‘dust settles’ that she remains a viable and productive member of the team.

Agent Garrett

Agent Garrett
Probably one of my personal favorites on the show, surprises us with a HUGE reveal and probably not what you expected.

Veteran actor Bill Paxton has taken the iconic role of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent John Garrett and built this character up into a likeable, tough son-of-a-bitch agent that kicks major ass and asks questions later. If you like this character as much as I, then ‘Turn, turn, turn’ may be somewhat of a disappointment. Sorry.

Agent Grant Ward

Agent Grant Ward
Suspicions and questions still swirl as to why Ward killed the supposed Clairvoyant in cold blood, and last night, things get cleared up (somewhat anyways), and another big reveal is unveiled.

Agent Ward has been a solid team member, confident, sure and loyal, so what gives with his recent ‘lapse’ last episode in walking up and shooting the defenseless wheelchair bound clairvoyant suspect? Well we finally learn why and if you’ve been a staunch Agent Ward groupie, I feel for you…

HYDRA

hail-hydra
HYDRA is front and center with their coming out party in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the crossover event that takes place in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Turn, turn, turn completes their utter annihilation of the once powerful spy organization S.H.I.E.L.D.

I’ll stop right here, so as not to reveal too much. If you want a more complete breakdown of the episode jump over to Entertainment Weekly’s breakdown of ‘Turn, turn, turn’

Let me know what you thought of last night’s game changing episode below. And, oh….HAIL HYDRA!

Any science fiction aficionado who has seen any notable TV show (ex. Fringe, Almost Human, Revolution, Person of Interest, etc.) or film (Star Trek, Super 8, etc.) knows what I’m talking about when I say, “Baaaaaad Robot.” It’s the iconic, little, red animated robot that skirts through the bushes at the conclusion of any show or film produced by Bad Robot Productions, a company owned by the renowned J.J.
