Salt Lake City ComicCon 2017 is over and done and it was just as enjoyable as the one before and the one before that. My yearly ‘family’ pilgrimage to one of the top 5 largest ComicCon’s in the United States pulled off without a hitch. And although I did not get the opportunity to sit in on any panels, the vendors, cosplay and cosplay contest more than adequately satisfied my geeky hunger! Here are some photos of the event.
Salt Lake City ComicCon 2017
Although we only attended the Saturday event (which is the most popular day to attend), we were able to cover the entirety of the convention floor. Having been to the event several times, there were many familiar vendor displays but like every con, there were many new ones as well.
We even got a chance to see actor John Barrowman (Arrow, Doctor Who, Torchwood), roll past us, through the crowd, standing atop a golf cart and filming surprised yet excited fans. A very cool moment indeed.
The cosplay contest was just as energetic and fun as previous years, although the ‘expert’ category was much smaller than before. Surprisingly, one of the most amazing contestants was a ‘Mary Poppins’ cosplayer in the ‘novice’ category who came on stage to the hit song ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious‘ and had the entire audience clapping away, fully engaged. fun times!
All in all, the show did not disappoint and already, I eagerly await Salt Lake ComicCon 2018. Nice job Salt Lake!
I am just as giddy with excitement as the next comic book fan when it comes to FINALLY being able to see and visit Wakanda and see the Black Panther Marvel Movie due out in theaters February 9th, 2018. But truth be told, I have virtually ZERO Black Panther collectible items, other that a couple great looking Funko POP toys. I need to spruce up my work office desk with something more, and I’m kinda thinking a Black Panther Marvel Movie Bust might just do the trick? So I started looking around and here is what I found.
Captain America:Civil War Black Panther Bust Bank Statue 1:2 Replica [Amazon]
Black Panther Statue Bust [@cheungkinmen]
This Black Panther Bust is a bit different – not exactly like what we’ve seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but more than likely more of a rendition of Black Panther from one of his comic book runs no doubt? The muscle tone of the sculpture looks great and I do love this version’s ‘mask’ look and feel? Maybe even moreso than the Civil War version, which is saying a lot since I like the MCU’s take on Black Panther in the movies. Apparently you have to message ‘Johnny’, the designer, to talk about the price and availability, which I haven’t yet done, but probably will at some point. If you would like to contact him, his email is here.
Stan Lee Autographed Black Panther Mini Bust [Hollywood Memorabilia]
The design of this mini bust Black Panther statue is well done, no argument here, but not not to my personal liking as much as the other two above. Have never been a huge fan of the large cape/collar version of Black Panther, but again, just a personal preference and nothing having to do with the STAN LEE autographed, awesome work featured here.
3D printed Black Panther Action Figure [Imprima Lab]
Although this 3D printed Black Panther design is apparently not for sale, it is actually one of my favorite designs (even though it is labeled as an action figure), and one I would probably purchase in an instant if I could. The design is patterned after an illustration that I had also come across some time ago and loved. The over-sized, Popeye-sized arms is a different, but welcomed new look, that stands out from other Black Panther statue and bust designs. It also borrows from the Marvel Civil War Black Panther suit design rather than one of the old school comic book looks. Definitely need to pursue this one a little bit more diligently. Wonder if this guy would make one for me?
Damn! I’m just trying to picture giving friends a ride and them sliding into the car, seeing me grasp, shift into gear and speed off, with my hand. at-rest on a jet-black, hilted Samurai Sword Shift Knob!? I wouldn’t say anything. I would turn to them, give a sly, teethy grin and say,’konichiwa BITCHES!’
This is very cool, and with the different accented colors, you could grab one that matched the exterior (or interior) of your ride. The WOW factor alone from anyone riding in the passenger seat or pulling up alongside and looking in would be worth the price of admission!
Of, course, trying to explain to an officer should you get pulled over that this was just a Samurai Sword Shift Knob and NOT an actual Samurai sword tucked next to your seat might be interesting as well.
Samurai Sword Shift Knob
The Samurai Sword Shift Knob is fully constructed of steel for durability, with polyester fabric weave and nickel plated brass accents.
- Approx. 8 Inches in height
- Weighs about 510 grams

Sideshow recently profiled collector Abril Reyes, who detailed (IMAGES) his amazing collection of geek stuff, ranging from statues and figures of popular characters from comic books, film and television to posters, books and other great items, collected from all over.
Although highly interested in collecting from an early age, Abril Reyes only recently started collecting statues and figurines in 2012. An avid Star Wars fan (aren’t we all in some respect…), Abril begin his journey obtaining geek stuff from a ‘galaxy far, far away’ initially but then very soon branched off, collecting figures from popular films from the 80’s (Terminator, Predator, Back to the Future, Robocop), cartoons (Transformers, Voltron, Voltes V) and only just recently modern day films like the Dark Knight and Iron Man.
If you couldn’t guess, some of his favorite items in his collection are from the Star Wars Mythos from Sideshow Toys and more specifically, the first Luke Skywalker DX figure by Hot Toys, signed by Mark Hamill at a recent Star Wars convention.
You can see more images of Abril’s collection on Sideshow Toys and browse through their extensive gallery of popular figures and statues from all your popular shows and programs.
The Summer is upon us, but before you know it, it’ll be time for college and moving day! Already you should be putting together that college dorm checklist with all the essentials, and if you’re not, consider this your ‘wake up’ call. So, why not start your checklist off with something to keep your beverages cold and within arm’s reach while coupe’d up in dorm…
BRINGING NEW MEANING TO “FROZEN” IN CARBONITE
When Princess Leia disguised herself as Boushh in order to crack open a frosty one, she wasn’t looking for a drink. Her tall, cold one that day happened to be none other than Han Solo himself. However, in your universe it’s probably more practical to opt for a standard refrigerator than a carbon freezing chamber (tibanna gas supplies being what they are today).
The Han Solo Fridge really is big: it can hold up to 18 cans of soda. It’s also one of those neato fridges that cools or heats its contents (depending on which temperature you need). And though the Han Solo Fridge be mighty, it’s still made to travel. It’s even got a handle on top for grabbing, which, let us tell you, is more convenient than carrying a huge block of flippin’ carbonite. Whether it’s blue milk or leftover bantha burgers, the Han Solo Fridge is ready for all your late-night bounty hunting. And by “bounty” we mean “snack.”
- Han Solo in Carbonite Fridge
- Officially-licensed Star Wars merchandise
- Has a warm and a cool setting for keeping food either warm or cold
- Rubber feet to protect surface
- Red LED lighting on front (switch on back in case you don’t want it)
- 2 removable shelves
- Top handle for portability
- Locking door to prevent spillage (push the second instrument panel in to release)
- Capacity: 18 cans of soda (with shelves removed)
- Includes fridge, removable shelf, 110V US AC power cord (for use in home), 12V DC power cord (for use in landspeeder car)
- Cooling Capability: approx. 32-44°F
- Heating Capability: approx. 131-149°F
- Outer Dimensions: approx. 19″ tall x 10.75″ x 10.75″
- Inner Dimensions: approx. 16″ tall x 8″ wide x 6″
- Weight (empty): 9.75 lbs.
Han Solo Mini Fridge is available at ThinkGeek for $149.99
I was a hardcore Dungeon & Dragons player back in the day and if I didn’t have other ‘responsibilities’ like…working, I would probably continue to spend every waking hour of the day and night rolling dice and slaying giants! But these days, the closest I can come to showing others that I too! Was once a member of this tight-knit gamer community, is carry around with me one of these expertly designed D20 Keychains from Etsy.com
- Dungeon & Dragons D20 keychains are HANDMADE. Which adds even a bit more ‘mysticism’ to these iconic bones!
- Materials used: plastic, metal, dice, keychain, D20
- Ships from Seekonk, Massachusetts so if you’re in the U.S., you’ll probably receive them pretty quick!
Each keychain comes with your choice of D20.
You have a choice of colors to choose from
You may select random D20 to get one of the non-regular D20s that the designer has in limited quantities.
You may also select random anything and the designer will pick a die at random for you, it could be any of the main 7 dice used and it will be a full size die. You may also message the designer on Etsy if you want a specific die type (aka D10, D6, D8 etc).
The Dungeon & Dragons D20 Keychains are available for $6.99 at Etsy.com
Well, it’s official, Scarlett Johansson will star in Ghost in the Shell. And although many ‘Black Widow’ fans may be pleased with the choice, MANY others are disappointed, that such a prominent role for a very popular Anime adaptation was not given to one of the many talented Japanese actresses out there. No matter, I’ve gone ahead and listed the actresses that SHOULD of been given the role!
First off, WHY NOT Scarlett Johansson
[box width=”260″ height=”275″ position=”left” textalign=”right”][/box]Scarlett is an absolutely gorgeous actress, who has performed admirably in a number of big budget films including most notably, Black Widow in The Avengers and Captain America: Winter Solider. So WHY NOT her? She has shown that she is more than capable at action-oriented roles among other skills, and to be honest, I am quite sure she could pull off a ‘relatively’ convincing Major Kusanagi in a real-adaptation of the hit Anime show Ghost in the Shell. But the issue I have is not what she is, but what she isn’t, and that is an asian actress that would more closely fit the role.
This is an issue Hollywood has been skirting for some time, casting actors and actresses in roles that calls for more ‘ethnicity.’ This is nothing new, as there have been countless discussions along these lines, especially over the course of the last several years. Consider films like The Lone Ranger, with Johnny Depp playing the Native American role of Tonto or the most recently released Exodus: Gods and Kings, with Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver and John Turturro cast in roles that should of clearly been cast differently.
All these actors and actresses are fantastically skilled and wonderful to watch, however, given the nature and roles in these films and the fact that today, we have a plethora of acting talent from every nationality and ethnicity, there should not be a reason to have to cast an ‘inaccurate’ representation of the role?
My Choices for Major Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell
As I had mentioned, there are plenty of talented Asian actresses from every corner of the globe who could fill the role of Major Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell. In fact, there are so many that just picking 5 was a monumental task.
You may or may not agree with my choices but here they are!
Rila Fukushima [Played Yukio in The Wolverine]
[box width=”800″ height=”460″][/box]
Rinko Kikuchi [Played Mako Mori in Pacific Rim]
[box width=”800″ height=”480″][/box]
Keiko Kitagawa [Played Reiko in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift]
[box width=”800″ height=”450″][/box]
Lucy Liu [Played O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill: Volume 1]
[box width=”800″ height=”530″][/box]
Ming-Na Wen [Plays Melinda May in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.]

Superhero support? You heard it right. Superheroes don’t only have just sidekicks in some instances, they also tend to have a ‘support infrastructure’ that helps them do what they do. With Fall TV shows nearing their end, we’ve had ample time to watch and compare superhero support, so without further ado, here is my pick for number one!
I’ve watched all these shows RELIGIOUSLY from the very beginning…
…so it’s safe to say that I am at the minimum, familiar, with the various ‘partnerships’ and ‘support teams’ on each of these respective shows. Though, even with that being said, my pick for the best support team is my own personal opinion. If you have seen these shows as well, I would be excited to hear your thinking on what team you best align with?
For me anyways, watching comic book superheroes and characters come to life in the living room is a dream come true. And, especially now, during what has been coined ‘The Golden Age of Television’ with the ‘quality’ of television shows at an all time high.
But just seeing the likes of The Flash or Green Arrow or character teams like S.H.I.E.L.D. or Jim Gordon grace me with their presence isn’t enough. When they are NOT on the screen, I have to be able to ‘stomach’ through other the performances of supporting cast members, namely the partners and support staff of our intrepid heroes. So WHO for me is:
- FUN and ENTERTAINING to watch
- Puts on great PERFORMANCES and ACTING
- And, who COMPLIMENTS the Hero or main character nicely?
Arrow’s Felicity Smoak and John Diggle
The brainy-brawn twosome of Felicify and Diggle works well and blends in great with Stephen Amell’s Arrow character. Diggle is a good ‘strong armed’ brute force back-up to Arrow, even though Arrow is well-versed at hand-to-hand, Diggle brings both brawn, guns and ‘reason’ to Arrow’s fighting game. Felicity is both EASY on the eyes and a great intellectual piece to the Arrow support team puzzle. Felicity though, can sometimes be annoying and maybe just a little too ‘blonde’ or ‘dingy’ than I would expect for a Grand Master Hacker. Maybe the BEST hacker in the superhero TV show lineup.
Gotham’s Harvey Bullock
I only picked Harvey because Jim Gordon’s list of allies, partners and ‘team’ is virtually non-existent. Gordon is a shining beacon of light, hope, honesty and integrity in a sea of otherwise shitty shoddy bad guys. Harvey is certainly no angel but he more often than not finds him aligned with Gordon on more cases than one. For a ‘tool’ I actually like Harvey, a good cop (when he wants to be), Harvey is one to ‘go with the crowd’, in this case being on ‘the take’ to crime bosses like most of Gotham’s police force. All he needs is some strong direction, which Gordon often provides.
Constantine’s Chas Chandler and Zed Martin
I’m not ‘sold’ on Chas’s purpose or usefulness for that matter to Constantine, other than being his driver and another ‘ear’ to listen to Constantine’s rants. Zed on the other hand has REAL talent, and has helped Constantine every step of the way since first being introduced in episode 2.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Melinda May, Skye, Jemma, Leo & Antoine
Director Coulsen’s team has been coming together, much more so than when the show first kicked off, when watching this supposedly ‘elite’ team stumble and trip was hard to bear week after week. The team is a little more sharper, even though HYDRA has decimated much of what the agency used to be, and has started to come into their own under Coulsen’s leadership.
May has always been the strong arm of the team and continues to be a solid contributor and cast on the team. Skye has traditionally been a ‘painful’ element to stomach watching, even though she is great on the eyes, but she too has come full circle and is starting to gel better within the series. Antoine has also been a solid and consistent piece. The problem I have is with the two ‘intellectuals’ of the bunch Leo and Jemma, once my strongest cast members behind Coulsen. The story ‘arc’ with having Leo still fumble along, after having sustained minor brain damage at the hands of Grant Ward, has more than played its part is now tiring to muddle through. It is this single piece that has killed S.H.I.E.L.D.s chances at being THE top support team.
The Flash’s Dr. Harrison Wells, Caitlin and Cisco
And the winner is – THE FLASH’s threesome of Dr. Harrison Wells, Cisco and Caitlin. Dr. Wells, though creepy, mysterious and always with a sinister snicker, is the Professor Xavier of television, brilliant and a source of badly needed guidance for the young Barry Allen. Caitlin is probably the weaker of the three for me, and is actually quite forgettable. Cisco on the other hand is the single strongest reason why I chose The Flash’s supporting team over all others.
Cisco played by Carlos Valdes is one of my favorite characters of all 5 superhero television shows, and that’s saying a lot since he is essentially SUPPORTING cast. His character reminds of Reggie Lee’s Sgt. Wu in the hit television series GRIMM. Smart, entertaining and extremely funny, Cisco is just plain FUN to watch each and every time he’s on screen. Take a second to listen to him next time you watch The Flash. He could literally be ANY one of us…a fanboy and geek who has suddenly be thrusted into the midst of superhero/supervillain mayhem! And he holds nothing back with being in league with the fastest man alive, having loads of fun while doing it and helping stop other supers from over-running Central City.
What team do you think is deserving of the title!
Again, strictly my own personal opinion, but I’d love to hear you assessment as well? Let’s give these support teams props and lift them up to be recognized! Let me know in the comments below, what TV superhero support team is your favorite?
