Well, it’s official, Scarlett Johansson will star in Ghost in the Shell. And although many ‘Black Widow’ fans may be pleased with the choice, MANY others are disappointed, that such a prominent role for a very popular Anime adaptation was not given to one of the many talented Japanese actresses out there. No matter, I’ve gone ahead and listed the actresses that SHOULD of been given the role!

First off, WHY NOT Scarlett Johansson

[box width=”260″ height=”275″ position=”left” textalign=”right”]kusinagi[/box]Scarlett is an absolutely gorgeous actress, who has performed admirably in a number of big budget films including most notably, Black Widow in The Avengers and Captain America: Winter Solider. So WHY NOT her? She has shown that she is more than capable at action-oriented roles among other skills, and to be honest, I am quite sure she could pull off a ‘relatively’ convincing Major Kusanagi in a real-adaptation of the hit Anime show Ghost in the Shell. But the issue I have is not what she is, but what she isn’t, and that is an asian actress that would more closely fit the role.

This is an issue Hollywood has been skirting for some time, casting actors and actresses in roles that calls for more ‘ethnicity.’ This is nothing new, as there have been countless discussions along these lines, especially over the course of the last several years. Consider films like The Lone Ranger, with Johnny Depp playing the Native American role of Tonto or the most recently released Exodus: Gods and Kings, with Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver and John Turturro cast in roles that should of clearly been cast differently.

All these actors and actresses are fantastically skilled and wonderful to watch, however, given the nature and roles in these films and the fact that today, we have a plethora of acting talent from every nationality and ethnicity, there should not be a reason to have to cast an ‘inaccurate’ representation of the role?

My Choices for Major Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell

As I had mentioned, there are plenty of talented Asian actresses from every corner of the globe who could fill the role of Major Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell. In fact, there are so many that just picking 5 was a monumental task.
